
US military forces shot down three drones operated by Mexican drug cartels along the southern border this week, marking the first operational use of a high-energy laser system against criminal aircraft in the region, according to a joint announcement from the Mexican Defense Ministry and US Northern Command.
Laser System Used in Border Operation
The interception occurred during the night of August 25 and into the early hours of August 26, military officials said. US forces deployed the Army’s Multi-Purpose High Energy Laser (AMP-HEL) system to bring down the aircraft near the Texas-Mexico border.
The drones had been classified as a physical threat to military personnel and Customs and Border Protection agents operating in the area. The devices were detected by the Joint Task Force-Southern Border, which monitors border activity from the US side.
According to the statement from US Northern Command and North American Aerospace Defense Command, the laser system successfully neutralized all three aircraft. Major General Curtis Taylor, commander of the joint task force, called the operation proof of his force’s readiness and technological edge.
“The successful neutralization of these hostile drones is direct proof of the readiness, vigilance, and advantage technological of the Joint Task Force,” Taylor said in the announcement.
Cartels Using Drones for Surveillance
The intercepted drones were commercial models adapted for criminal use. Taylor said cartels have increasingly turned to unmanned aircraft systems to monitor law enforcement movements and facilitate illegal crossings.
The Mexican Defense Ministry confirmed the operations were part of ongoing “mirror” or concurrent missions along the shared border. These joint efforts began February 5, 2025, and involve simultaneous reconnaissance patrols by both countries’ armed forces within their respective territories.
Information about the intercepted aircraft was shared with Mexican military officials through the 8th Military Zone command in Reynosa, Tamaulipas. The Defense Ministry noted that the drones were detected and disabled in US sovereign territory.
The operations reflect broader bilateral cooperation aimed at combating drug and arms trafficking across the frontier. Mexican authorities said the surveillance drones posed operational risks to both US and Mexican personnel working the border region.
US military officials have not disclosed the exact location where the intercept occurred beyond identifying it in the Texas border region. The three drones were linked to Mexican criminal organizations, according to the official statements.
