Susurran tu nombre arrives on Netflix as a crime thriller starring Robert De Niro. The film adapts Alex North’s novel of the same name. The story follows a father searching for his missing son, while an investigation stirs up memories of a serial killer known as the Whisper Man.
Alex North built the narrative spine from his own life experiences. The author described how he turned ordinary moments into the plot’s framework. One incident happened at a music festival. North was eating breakfast at a hotel when a call came. He had to pay for his meal, but the receptionist explained someone else had already checked out and covered the cost.
When he asked what the man looked like, the employee could not recall. North felt uneasy but saw a potential story in the oddity. Another memory came from his own home. His son once spoke to someone in another room. When asked who he was talking to, the child replied he was playing with “the boy on the floor,” a line that appears in the movie. That specific phrase sent a chill down the author’s spine.
North also considered the strange coincidence of his son claiming to be hugged by a woman at night after his grandmother’s death. The occurrences stopped after the boy was told to ask the presence to leave. Even though he admits it likely was a way for his child to process grief, the thought of what might have actually happened lingered in his mind.

The narrative structure of Susurran tu nombre eventually centers on Tom Kennedy. He is a writer of crime novels trying to rebuild his life with his eight-year-old son Jake after the death of his wife. Jake disappears, sending Tom into a panic. He turns to his estranged father, Pete Willis, played by Robert De Niro. Pete was once the detective who captured the Whisper Man, Frank Carter. Now Carter is in prison, yet the methods of his old crimes seem to be repeating.
Tom, Pete, and detective Amanda Beck pursue the leads, uncovering connections between the kidnapping and the serial killer’s past.
