Canadian Billionaires to Acquire Boots, Shelving IPO Plans - acquire boots
The Weston family, owners of Primark and Fortnum & Mason, are finalizing a £6.8 billion deal for Boots.

Boots, the British chemist, is set to be acquired by Canada’s billionaire Weston family, according to reports. This move would abandon plans for a stock market listing, dealing a blow to the City.

A significant acquisition

Boots, founded in 1849 as a family herbal medicine shop in Nottingham, has been a prominent high street name. Its return to the UK stock market after a 19-year absence was anticipated to boost the City’s confidence.

Impact on the London Stock Exchange

Dan Coatsworth, head of markets at AJ Bell, commented that a takeover by the Westons makes a Boots IPO unlikely in the near future. He emphasized the significance of this development for the London Stock Exchange, which has been striving to attract more companies to list in London.

Boots’ strong brand recognition and high street presence could have attracted retail investors, making its absence from the stock market a missed opportunity.

Their ownership of Loblaws and Shoppers Drug Mart in Canada, through Wittington Investments, demonstrates their experience in the retail and pharmacy sectors.

Boots’ recent history

Sycamore Partners’ breakup of Walgreens Boots Alliance last year led to the creation of the Boots Group, encompassing UK and Irish chains, Boots Opticians, and the No7 Beauty Company. Italian billionaire Stefano Pessina and his wife, Ornella Barra, continue to own a 44% stake in Boots.

Former Currys boss Alex Baldock’s leadership at Boots, which employs 51,000 staff in Britain, had fueled optimism for a potential float. However, industry experts note that Boots’ strong beauty sales and weight-loss jab demand have made it an attractive target for buyers and investors.

With annual sales of £7.5 billion and a workforce of 51,000, Boots remains a significant player in the UK retail sector.

Founded in 1849, Boots has long been a staple of British high streets, and its future under new leadership will be closely watched by industry observers and consumers alike.
