Temple Bar pub shut down over cockroach infestation

Temple Bar pub shut down over cockroach infestation - cockroach infestation
Darkey Kelly’s pub on Fishamble Street was closed from August 11 to 17 due to cockroach activity.

The Darkey Kelly’s pub in Temple Bar was shut down for nearly a week last month after cockroach activity was discovered by inspectors. The closure, which lasted from August 11 to 17, came after live and dead cockroaches were found throughout the bar. Located on Fishamble Street, the pub’s issues were not limited to a single area, as the infestation was widespread.

Inspectors found dead roaches on stick traps under shelving and AV equipment in a small storage area behind the bar, as well as behind three fridges. Notably, dead cockroaches were also discovered on an electric fly killer on the floor behind the bar. Live cockroaches were seen walking across the floor near open ice, glasses, keg taps, and other beverage equipment, posing an immediate risk to hygiene.

Serious Risk of Contamination

The HSE inspector stated that these conditions posed a serious risk of food and drink becoming contaminated, rendering them unfit for human consumption. This incident was not isolated, as two other food businesses were also ordered to close in August. The recurrence of such issues shows the need for vigilant monitoring and stricter adherence to hygiene standards across the industry.

The Bartkus Uncle Meat manufacturing plant in Cavan and the Mini India grocery store on Westmoreland Street in Dublin faced similar issues. Bartkus Uncle Meat, located in Corragarry, has been closed since August 20 after an inspector witnessed a live rodent running across the cold room floor. Additionally, rodent droppings were found throughout the premises, and dirt, grime, and grease were observed on walls, floors, ceilings, and food contact surfaces. The facility lacked essential hygiene infrastructure, including hand-washing sinks and hand-drying facilities. The business was also operating without proper registration or approval from a competent authority, further exacerbating the situation.

Wider Concerns Over Food Safety

The closures highlight a broader issue of food safety and hygiene in the industry. While the specific incidents at Darkey Kelly’s and other establishments are alarming, they also serve as a reminder of the importance of rigorous safety protocols in food handling and preparation. The recurrence of such issues suggests a systemic problem that requires industry-wide attention and action.

The Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) CEO, Greg Dempsey, expressed concern over the deficiencies in basic food safety controls. He emphasized that consumers have a right to safe food and that businesses must implement effective measures to prevent pests and maintain cleanliness. Dempsey further stressed the need for effective food safety management systems, supported by properly trained staff and adequate hygiene facilities, to ensure that safety controls are consistently applied.

Dempsey’s statement shows the need for proactive measures in the food industry. It’s not just about reacting to incidents but also about preventing them through robust safety management systems and staff training. Regular audits and staff education can play a key role in identifying and addressing potential risks before they escalate into major issues.

Enforcement and Public Health

The FSAI’s role in enforcing food safety standards is critical. When businesses fail to meet legal responsibilities, as seen in these cases, enforcement action is necessary to protect public health. The closure of these establishments serves as a warning to other businesses to prioritize food safety. It also reinforces the importance of compliance with legal requirements to maintain consumer trust and public health.

The incidents also highlight the importance of regular inspections and the need for businesses to be proactive in maintaining high standards. While the closures may be inconvenient for customers, they are essential to ensure that food safety is not compromised. Regular self-audits and a culture of continuous improvement can help businesses avoid such disruptions and maintain high standards of hygiene.

In addition to the closures, prohibition orders were served to the Roscommon wellness business Live5D Health, barring the sale of several products, including powder dietary supplements. This further emphasizes the FSAI’s commitment to ensuring that all food-related businesses adhere to strict safety standards. The breadth of enforcement actions taken by the FSAI demonstrates their full approach to safeguarding public health across various sectors of the food industry.
