More than half of parents in Ireland are opting out of enrolling their children in sports due to rising costs, according to a survey by Aviva Ireland. The study, which included 750 parents and guardians, revealed that 51% had decided against signing their child up for a sport or activity because of financial concerns. This trend reflects a broader challenge faced by families across the country, where the financial burden of extracurricular activities is increasingly influencing parental decisions.
The financial strain is evident, with 80% of respondents stating that the cost of their children’s sports is putting pressure on their household budget. Of these, 31% described it as a major financial burden.
The survey identified several significant expenses contributing to this issue. Club membership fees and sports clothing and kit were the top concerns, each cited by 36% of parents. Other costs included sports footwear (33%), travel expenses (30%), and registration fees (29%).
These financial pressures are directly impacting children’s participation. 17% of parents have considered removing their child from a sport due to cost, while 13% have decided against enrolling their child in a new sport altogether.

The research was conducted as part of ReBoot with Aviva, a partnership between Aviva and the Football Association of Ireland (FAI). This initiative aims to reduce the cost of playing football by encouraging families to donate outgrown boots for reuse. By supporting a culture of sharing and sustainability, ReBoot seeks to make football more accessible to families who might otherwise be priced out of the sport.
Caroline Cummins, sponsorship manager at Aviva Ireland, emphasized the importance of football in young people’s lives. “It helps them stay active, build confidence, and be part of their local community,” she said. However, the research highlights that the cost of participation is becoming a significant challenge for many families. Cummins noted that initiatives like ReBoot are essential to ensuring that financial barriers do not prevent children from enjoying the benefits of sport.
The ReBoot program offers a practical solution by allowing families to pass on outgrown football boots to other young players, helping to alleviate some of the financial burden associated with grassroots football.
