The Hospital General de México “Dr. Eduardo Liceaga” in Mexico City has reached an agreement with resident doctors affected by a salmonella outbreak to reimburse them for expenses related to the infection. According to the Secretaría de la Salud (SSa), the agreement was made after a meeting with representatives of the Comité de Médicos Residentes.
This meeting aimed to address the concerns of the resident doctors, who had been protesting and threatening a work stoppage to demand better working conditions. The doctors had also closed off a street near the hospital, holding signs that read “¿Y quién cuidan a los que cuidan?” (“And who takes care of those who care?”) and “salvar vidas no debería costarnos la nuestra” (“Saving lives shouldn’t cost us ours”).
Agreement Details
The agreement includes the reimbursement of expenses incurred by the resident doctors due to the infection. The SSa stated that the Comité de Residentes must provide documentation to prove the expenses, which will be reviewed and processed through the Dirección de Educación y Capacitación en Salud. To make this reimbursement effective, the committee must send proof of costs through this educational and training office. The SSa indicated that these costs were erogated by patients or their relatives for their own medical recovery and return to health.

The Dirección de Educación y Capacitación en Salud will serve as the institutional liaison between the Comité de Residentes and the hospital’s competent areas to receive, channel, and follow up on requests and issues presented by the resident doctors. This office will function as the primary link to ensure that the communication regarding the gastroenteritis outbreak reported on September 3 is properly addressed and managed.
Investigation and Follow-up
The SSa informed the resident doctors that the incidents are being investigated by various health and administrative authorities. Once the investigations are concluded, the results and conclusions will be made available through public means determined by the competent authority. The authorities stated that these events are known to various sanitary and administrative bodies, and once investigators or auditors conclude their work and issue corresponding determinations, the results will be legally available to the public.
Regarding security and maintenance issues, the hospital authorities agreed to inform the resident doctors about the follow-up and closure of reports, as well as the participation of public servants involved in each stage. The institutional channel for presenting and following up on these reports will be through the corresponding service chiefs. These chiefs are responsible for managing the details of each report’s life cycle, ensuring that all service personnel are accounted for in every step of the process.
